Charting My Career Path: From Intern to Full time Engineer

As I reach the midpoint of my Outreachy internship with CNCF OpenTelemetry, I find myself reflecting not only on what I’ve learned but also on the future I want to create for myself in the tech industry. This internship has been transformative, deepening my technical skills, expanding my network, and solidifying my passion for open source. Now, it’s time to channel that growth into a meaningful career path.

The Goal: A Full-Time Remote Role in Open Source

My ultimate career goal at the moment is to secure a full-time remote role as a developer, technologist or technical writer in an open-source project. I’m particularly drawn to roles that involve:

  • Building accessible, scalable, and user-friendly tools that help developers and businesses thrive in the cloud-native ecosystem.

  • Creating technical documentation to lower the barrier to entry for contributors and users alike.

  • Mentoring and community-building, inspired by the supportive and inclusive environment I’ve experienced in OpenTelemetry.

Relocation for the right opportunity is also something I’m open to. If a company or organization is willing to sponsor relocation, I’m excited by the idea of working in a new environment and bringing my global perspective to their team.

Why Open Source?

Open source resonates with me because of its collaborative spirit and commitment to making technology accessible to all. As someone who benefited from community-driven learning, I want to give back by contributing to projects that are shaping the future of technology. This internship has shown me the power of open-source communities to solve complex problems together and create solutions that reflect diverse perspectives.

My Skills and What I Bring to the Table

Technical Skills

  • Programming Languages: Python, JavaScript, and Go.

  • Cloud-Native Technologies: Experience working with OpenTelemetry and a foundational understanding of Kubernetes and containerization with experience in cloud platfoms like Microsoft Azure.

  • Documentation Expertise: Skilled at creating user-friendly guides, from onboarding materials to detailed technical documentation.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Collaborative and empathetic team member who thrives in diverse environments.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, honed through technical writing and mentoring new contributors.

  • Passion for mentorship and fostering inclusive spaces where everyone can succeed.

Languages Spoken

I’m fluent in English.

What I’m Looking For

I’m seeking a full-time role, ideally remote, that allows me to:

  1. Work in a collaborative, open-source-driven environment with companies that involve OpenTelemetry.

  2. Contribute to meaningful projects in cloud-native development or technical documentation.

  3. Grow professionally by learning new technologies and taking on leadership opportunities.

I am available to start after my Outreachy internship concludes in March 2025.
